Isn't nostalgia a wonderful thing. How we ponder the life and times of the past, as we recall it, in all it's warm and fuzziness. Except that we can't actually replicate how we felt back then, it's only how our minds perceive it was. It is, of course, impossible to time travel, and actually go back and have that same feeling...except via the wonderful world of television. With the introduction of digital TV (here in Australia), we have had an explosion of new channels, offering up all sorts of 'programming'. Some are for children, some dedicated to sports, but most have been aimed at specific demographics. Having said that, basically they are a conduit for replaying old TV shows. I have to admit that the promos for 'Happy Days', 'The Brady Bunch' and the like, created that warm and fuzziness I was talking about. So when me and Cheryl (the wife's name has been protected for.....well....my own safety), sat down to watch our first episode of the The Brady Bunch, we had no idea we would be watching the actual first episode of The Brady Bunch. Whilst that was exciting (at first) it become abundantly clear that the feelings we had, all those years ago, appear to have dried up. The same can be said for Happy Days. After a few episodes, we couldn't watch anymore, for fear of tainting the nostalgic feelings we had for those shows.
I do say, that there are classic programs and movies, however, sometimes it is best that they stay in the past and let the memories of them conjure up thoughts of laughter, sadness & good times. Because in today's reality, they are a pale imitation of what we thought they were.
